I thought loneliness happened to other people — until it happened to me.

The story
Why I started Beluga.
At 24, I got seriously ill. A virus affected my nervous system and I ended up on long-term sick leave — then COVID hit and everything stalled. I kept waiting to be ‘fixed’ before I could get back to normal life. That moment never came.
As my health got worse, I became really isolated. Even small social things felt overwhelming. But every time I pushed myself to show up, I felt better for it. I still didn’t call it loneliness — I had people who loved me, and admitting it felt almost shameful, especially when you’re young and look connected.
Looking back, I’d felt it long before I got ill. Six years in a big London job, a full life on paper — and still, sometimes, completely disconnected in a room full of people. Disconnected from others, but mostly from myself.
What I learned is that connection doesn’t just happen. It takes intention, a bit of action, and making things easy enough that we actually do them. That’s why I built Beluga Pods.
